Barbour County Formed in 1832 from parts of Randolph, Harrison and Lewis Counties;
named in honor of Philip Pendleton Barbour, distinguished jurist of Virginia.

Harrison County Created in 1784 from Monongalia County and named for Benjamin
Harrison, distinguished Virginian, who was the father of William Henry Harrison, ninth
President of the United States, and the great grandfather of Benjamin Harrision,
twenty-third President.

Marion County Created in 1842 from parts of Monongalia and Harrision Counties, and
named in honor of General Francis Marion, of Revolutionary War fame, know in history as
"The Swamp Fox."
