Barbour County

Formed in 1832 from parts of Randolph, Harrison and Lewis Counties; named in honor of Philip Pendleton Barbour, distinguished jurist of Virginia.

Harrison County

Created in 1784 from Monongalia County and named for Benjamin Harrison, distinguished Virginian, who was the father of William Henry Harrison, ninth President of the United States, and the great grandfather of Benjamin Harrision, twenty-third President.

Marion County

Created in 1842 from parts of Monongalia and Harrision Counties, and named in honor of General Francis Marion, of Revolutionary War fame, know in history as "The Swamp Fox."

Monongalia County

Formed in 1776 from the District of West Augusta (Virginia) and named for the Monongahela River.

Preston County

Formed in 1818 from Monongalia County and named in honor of James Patton Preston, Governor of Virginia 1816-1819.

Taylor County

Created in 1844 from parts of Harrison, Barbour and Marion Counties, and named for Senator John Taylor, (1750-1824), distinguished soldier and statesman of Carolina County, Virginia.
