Allegheny Highlands /
North
Including Dolly Sods, Canaan
Valley, and Blackwater Falls
The northern sub-region of
the Allegheny Highlands is West Virginia's largest
winter-destination area. Downhill and cross-country skiing
give way to high-country hiking, biking, and angling in
warmer months.

Focus:
The Canaan
Valley
Appalachia's
highest upland valley, Canaan descends to only 3,500-feet
above sea level. Among its deer-filled pastures
and wetlands you'll find some of West Virginia's most
elegant leisure homes. Skiing grew popular here in the
1970s after an investor spotted snow while flying overhead
one spring -- long after snow had melted everywhere else.
Cabin and Canaan mountains form the valley walls, reaching
heights in excess of 4,600-feet-above sea level.
