Climbing Tips

Climbing Season

The climbing season throughout much of West Virginia extends from April through November, though good climbing days occur in winter. Optimum months are usually late April through mid-June and mid-September through late October. Summer temperatures hover in the mid 80s to lower 90s, and humidity then varies from 70-to-90 percent. Winter tend toward chilly dampness, though mild spells allow for perfect conditions.

Climbing Safety

Climbing is inherently risky and hazardous and is potentially dangerous. Skill and technique is paramount before attempting any climb, regardless of height or difficulty. Seek instruction before venturing onto the cliffs and boulders.

  • Remember the following when climbing without an accredited instructor:
  • Check your knots and harness buckles frequently.
  • Know your partners and their habits.
  • Check your belay: are you sure you're on?
  • Use extra care when lowering to maintain enough rope.
  • Fixed gear can be unreliable: back it up when possible.
  • Always double check your rappel system. Then check it again.
  • Familiarize yourself with other natural hazards in the outdoor environment.
