Rural life in West Virginia through the 1800s is preserved at Watters Smith Memorial State Park, the farmstead operated by the family of Watters Smith, who settled on Duck Creek, a tributary of the West Fork River, in the late 1700s. The pioneer home, farm, pastures, woodlands, and outbuildings became part of the state park system in 1949. Picnic shelters and miles of hiking and biking trails attract visitors throughout the year, though the restored farmstead and adjacent museum are open only on weekends through summer. Four generations of the Watters Smith family lived on the property, and their collective contributions are on display at the museum, in the farmhouse, and throughout the property.
