Mason County, in western West Virginia (WV), was established in 1804 and named for Virginia statesman George Mason. Its county seat is at Point Pleasant.
The Mason County landscape is relatively gentle, and its ridges seldom rise more than 400 feet above the valleys of the Ohio and Kanawha rivers, which join along the western flank of the county at Point Pleasant.
In 1774, Virginia militia and Mingo and Shawnee warriors led by Cornstalk battled at Point Pleasant. The area around Point Pleasant is popularly known as the haunt of the legendary Mothman, a reportedly altruistic alien that has appeared intermittently at night since the 1970s. Mason County is largely agricultural. As of the 2010 census, its population was 27,324.
