Mineral County, in northeastern West Virginia (WV), was created in 1866 and named for its mineral resources, which include the easternmost deposits of coal in West Virginia. Its county seat is at Keyser. The North Branch of the Potomac River courses across the northern boundary of the county, descending eastward out of the Allegheny Mountains. Mineral County is renowned for its agriculture and mountain scenery. Its northern reaches approach the city of Cumberland, Maryland (MD). The birthplace of Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, is preserved near Dolls Gap. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mineral County was 28,212.
