Athens, WV (West Virginia), an community in Mercer County, was incorporated in 1906 and named for Athens, Greece, an ancient center for education. It is the home of Concord University. First known as Concord Church, its name was changed in in 1896 to eliminate confusion with a post office in the eastern panhandle named "Concord." During the Civil War, the seat of Mercer County was moved here after courthouse nearby at Princeton was burned.
