Buckhannon, WV (West Virginia), the county seat of Upshur County, was established in 1816 on a bend in the Buckhannon River. The town may have been named by European settlers for Delaware chieftan, Buckongohanon, who considered the area a favorite hunting ground, or for John Buchannon, a missionary who traveled the area in the 1780s. Buckhannon is the site of West Virginia Wesleyan College, founded in 1890 by the Methodist Episcopal Church.
