Situated along the North Fork of the Blackwater River and on the flank of the Monongahela National Forest, Thomas is a popular destination for tourists. Blackwater Falls State Park and Canaan Valley Resort State Park are located three miles south and 13 miles southeast of the town, repectively. Timberline and Canaan Valley ski resorts climb into the mountains 13 miles southeast. Fairfax Stone State Park is located five miles to the north.
The near reaches of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge are located five miles east of Thomas, and the Dolly Sods Wilderness, part of the national forest, approaches Thomas 10 miles to the southeast.

Thomas is located on highways US-219 and WV-32 approximately two miles northwest of Davis, West Virginia, 14 miles northeast of Parsons, West Virginia, and 22 miles south of Oakland, Maryland.
