A Union Regimental Band plays under the shade of a mature Sweet Gum tree in the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio, during a ceremony in the week of Jefferson Davis’ birthday. The graves are briefly decorated with flags twice a year: once on Memorial Day (with American flags) and a second time in June with Confederate Battle Flags. Early in the war, many of the detainees at Camp Chase were western Virginians accused of being bushwhackers, saboteurs or spies for the Confederacy. (Photo by William Kerrigan)
