After an adventure in Pocahontas County, nothing beats good food

MARLINTON, W.Va. — Skiing, hiking, biking, and other outdoor pursuits in the West Virginia highlands can work up monster appetites. That's why the travel bureau in Pocahontas County, where those pursuits are chief, is celebrating its diverse restaurants.

"After a big day on the slopes and trails, there's nothing like a big meal," says Jake Hyer, marketing specialist for the Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

From gourmet to homestyle to après-ski, various restaurants cluster around the ski areas on Snowshoe Mountain and pepper the small towns tucked among its vast wilderness areas.

To highlight its food culture, the bureau has established "Pocahontas County Restaurant Week," to be celebrated March 8-15 (2025). The week-long celebration will underscore the involvement of producers who provide locally grown and sourced ingredients, from maple syrup to coffee to vegetables and meat.

The event is being celebrated between the two weekends of the Mountain State Maple Days during "Maple Month," a new statewide initiative that celebrates the diversity of West Virginia syrups from Feb. 15 to March 15.

Along with the week, the bureau is sponsoring a series of giveaways through its social media channel through December 17, National Maple Day.

A winner will be chosen from a pool of sign-ups for the bureau's restaurant week page and will be selected and announced on February 13, before the first Mountain State Maple Days weekend.

Prizes will include March 14-15 lodging at The Electric Moon Inn’s ‘Opera Suite,’ two tickets to a March 25 show at the Pocahontas County Opera House, dinner for two at two participating restaurants of the winner’s choice, and local Maple Syrup, arts, crafts, and county made culinary fare.

The bureau also promotes a Pocahontas County Maple Cookbook, which showcases recipes from local restaurants and producers. It will be available for free at participating dining locations.
