W.Va. governor to speak at elk-release event near Logan

Fifty elk will be released in the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area near Logan, West Virginia.

The W.Va. Division of Natural Resources will host a public ceremony May 15 to introduce 50 elk recently acquired from Arizona.

Gov. Jim Justice and division director Stephen McDaniel will speak about this next important step in the state’s elk reintroduction program.

The event, which will start at 1 p.m. at the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area near Logan, is hosted in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and The Conservation Fund.

Shuttles, provided by the division, will transport guests from a designated parking area at the entrance of the management area to the event site.

The Arizona elk, viewable from the event’s staging area, have been held in a five-acre pen since March in compliance with federal disease-testing guidelines.

Although the elk will not be released during the event, they will soon join 35 other elk that had been previously acquired from Land-Between-the-Lakes National Recreation Area in western Kentucky.
