Organizers of the sixth annual spring wildflower walk set for April 6 at Saint Albans City Park are expecting more participants as word of the event grows and ancillary programs are developed.
More than 150 people joined in last year's walk, which follows the park's nature trail through the wooded hills that skirt the city to the south, according to Debbie Keener, an event organizer.
Many of West Virginia's best known wild flowers appear along the gentle half mile trail, Keener said.
"For a community the size of St. Albans, this is a good program that the entire family can participate in together," Keener said. "We offer a number of other larger events, but this one is essentially budget-free."
Beginning at 9 a.m., this year's program will include wildflower hikes, a wildflower photography hike, and three children's events — a scavenger hunt, an obstacle course, and a leaf-print and tree-identification workshop.
Smokey Bear is also expected to make an appearance at this family friendly event.
The Kanawha Valley Bee Keepers Association will present an 11:30 a.m. program about honey bees, and other programs and exhibits will include early medicinal plants, information on the state master naturalist's program, a health-and-blood pressure check station, and an exhibit by the Coal River Group that explores the development of the Coal River.
The Saint Albans Stormwater Group is hosting a rain-barrel making workshop for participants who would like to take a rain barrel home. Only 15 slots available for the workshop, and interested persons are encouraged to register by 9 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. workshop. A minimal fee of $15 covers the cost of the barrel and materials.
Hot dogs and drinks will also be for sale, and sponsors have provided light refreshments along with door prizes that will be given away throughout the duration of the event.
Parking is available at the baseball field parking lot. Donations are appreciated and will be applied to future wildflower events.
Hiking boots and rain gear are suggested as the event will proceed, rain or shine.
