Hunters in Barbour, Jackson, Mason, Upshur must bring deer to stations

FARMINGTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is reminding hunters that they must bring deer harvested in Barbour, Jackson, Mason, and Upshur counties on Nov. 21-22 to a biological data collection station for carcass examination.

Assisting in a study of deer in those counties, division personnel will collect data on harvested deer at 18 locations in those counties from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Steve Rauch, assistant chief of game management for the division, says the data collected at these stations will help biologists manage the deer population.

“This data collection effort is an important part of a three-year study on the population dynamics of white-tailed deer in West Virginia,” Rauch said.

“Hunter cooperation is essential to the success of West Virginia’s deer management program. By measuring physical characteristics and age at harvest, our biologists will be better able to manage our deer population."

The examination requirement was first announced in the 2022-2023 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary, which can be downloaded at . More information can be found in the summary of changes on the first page and in the deer regulations on page 14.

Hunters bringing their deer to the data collection stations must still check in their deer at , by telephone or at a license agent. The biological data collection stations can be found at the following locations.

Barbour and Upshur counties are located in north-central West Virginia. Mason and Jackson are located in the Ohio Valley in the western state.
