WVU program to help pay fees, tuition for West Virginia students

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — is launching a new program that will provide funding to cover the costs of tuition and university fees for qualifying incoming and current West Virginia students beginning in fall 2025 fall.

The program is open to resident undergraduate students across the WVU system with a family adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less who annually complete the free application for federal student aid.

The WVU system includes campuses at Morgantown, , and , according to Steve Hahn, interim vice president for enrollment management.

Once their applications are submitted, Hahn says the students are automatically evaluated for eligibility and no further action is necessary.

Should a student’s family income rise above the threshold after their initial enrollment as an undergraduate, the university will continue to honor the program’s benefits, he said.

The program works in combination with other scholarships and aid to further remove barriers and ease students’ and families’ financial burdens.

He added that the initiative builds on the positive momentum the university is experiencing in student applications, which are up about 16% compared to last year in the enrollment cycle.

“By presenting greater accessibility and affordability to any West Virginian with aspirations to pursue higher education,” Hahn said, "we hope to take price considerations out of the decision for even more students to attend and complete college

Students must complete the federal application by August 1 for the fall 2025 semester. The is ready to help students who have questions about the process or how to fill out the forms. There is not a separate application for the WVU Guarantee program.

According to vice provost Mark Gavin, who oversees academic budgets and strategic initiatives in the , the program is critical for preparing young West Virginians to guide the state forward.

“WVU Guarantee is a critical investment in our access mission and the development of the next generation of West Virginia’s leaders, field experts, researchers and entrepreneurs,” Gavin said.

“In doing so, we are guaranteeing access to extraordinary, challenging, life-changing experiences for our students, whether they’re choosing WVU for the first time or returning home.”
