West Virginia launches pet-friendly “West FURginia” state park ranger program
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia officials have launched the West “FURginia” State Park Ranger program, a pet-friendly initiative designed to help park guests and their dogs explore the Mountain State’s natural beauty together.
Visitors to state parks who bring their furry friends will receive a certificate and their pooches a commemorative dog tag after completing five activities on West Virginia State Parks, according to Dillard Price, acting chief of West Virginia State Parks.

To participate, guests should stop by nature centers at parks to pick up an official “West FURginia Ranger” checklist, says Price, who emphasizes the state parks system’s commitment to welcoming pets.
“Pets hold a special place in our lives and in the hearts of our park visitors,” Price said. “This program celebrates that bond while giving guests another reason to get outdoors, explore West Virginia’s natural beauty, and make new memories with their loyal companions.”
West Virginia’s state parks and forests offer numerous pet-friendly accommodations, enabling families to enjoy overnight stays without leaving their pets behind.
Valerie Chaney, chief naturalist for West Virginia State Parks in Charleston, notes that pet-friendly accommodations are in high demand, so guests are encouraged to call ahead to confirm availability when planning their trip.
“West Virginia’s state parks are welcoming places for everyone, including your pets,” Cheney said. “This program adds a fun, family-friendly way to enjoy the outdoors and makes trips to our parks even more special for those who want to share the experience with their pets.”
To ensure a positive experience for everyone, guests traveling with pets are kindly requested to observe the following park “petiquette” during their stay.
- Dogs and cats are permitted in designated pet-friendly lodge rooms, cabins, and cottages. A maximum of two pets per room or cabin.
- Pets must be leashed and restrained at all times during their stay.
- Certification of vaccinations from a veterinarian is required.
- Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
- Guests must use designated pet-walking areas, where available.
- Guests are responsible for any damages or extra cleaning fees.

There’s a reason humans are spending more time walking together through the woods with their dogs. The experience offers numerous benefits for both. For dogs, woodland environments offer rich scent-scapes and varied terrain that stimulate their minds and bodies. Exploring nature gives them a chance to engage in their natural behaviour. Sniffing helps dogs lower their heart rates, and the varied ground of forests helps strengthen muscles and joints.
For humans, being out among trees and greenery offers measurable wellness benefits. Studies show that spending just a couple of hours in the woods can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones such as cortisol, and boost immune function through exposure to phytoncides, which are chemicals produced by trees.
Woodland walks also strengthen the bond between humans and their dogs. Sharing a peaceful trail creates meaningful connections and provides mutual enjoyment. Both parties slow down, become more present, and benefit from the quiet restoration nature provides. The woodland walk becomes a shared experience of mindfulness and companionship.
West Virginia’s state parks and forests are the vacation destination of choice for more than 7 million people each year. Comprising 35 parks, nine forests, and two rail trails, the West Virginia State Parks system offers endless opportunities for family fun and adventure. Make memories that last forever.
