West Virginia may be among the best destinations for birding in the U.S. More than 300 species call the state home (at least temporarily, as many overwinter in the tropics). I asked naturalist Randy Bodkins which summer denizens were most likely to be spotted by those of us who have the opportunity to get out and observe. Here are five to watch for. The Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus) is found throughout West Virginia in late-April and early May when it passes through to its breeding grounds in the Allegheny Mountains and in the northern counties. Its brilliant rose-colored breast and black and white markings are hard to miss. Flocks of ten or more are not uncommon at backyard sunflower feeders. Its song is music itself.
