The founder and long-time editor of West Virginia Explorer, David Sibray has made a life’s work of exploring and promoting West Virginia. He conceived of creating West Virginia Explorer in the late 1990s while a publisher of niche magazines for Thomson Newspapers. Sibray was a founding member of West Virginia Group, a marketing agency dedicated to promoting tourism and economic-development in West Virginia, and was marketing director for several state agencies and bureaus, including Theatre West Virginia and the Southern West Virginia Convention & Visitors Bureau. In addition to his current position as editor, he is the president of Sibray Marketing & Publishing, which works in concert with West Virginia Explorer and other publications in the Mid-Atlantic region to help promote West Virginia commerce.
Sibray was born at Wheeling, West Virginia, but spent his youth in Beckley, West Virginia, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1983. He attended both Wheeling Jesuit University and West Virginia University.
