Hike to Long Point at Summersville Lake set for April 8

A walk on the Long Point, the focus of a two-hour guided hike scheduled for April 8 near

According to Levi Moore of Active Southern West Virginia, the Long Point Trail is a must-do in south-central West Virginia, though not as well known as the similarly named Long Point trail 20 miles to the southwest at Fayetteville.

"The Long Point trail is a relatively easy trail. It takes hikers through beautiful forests and ends at an outstanding overlook of Summersville Lake. It's a wonderful and little-known gem," Moore said.

"If you're lucky you'll catch the bald eagle that's known to nest in the cliffs there at the point."

At least two legendary rock outcrops in southern West Virginia are named Long Point. Because of its view of the New River Gorge Bridge, Long Point near Fayetteville may be best known, but Long Point near Summersville offers it own brand of spectacular scenery.

The 3.8-mile hike is free and open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. at the red gate near the entrance to the Summersville Airport. The hike is scheduled to end at 4:30 p.m.
