A wide range of Civil War-themed events and craft displays has been scheduled at Canaan Valley Resort to honor the anniversary of West Virginia’s statehood June 21-23.
West Virginia Days festivities start Friday, June 21, with wagon rides and an encampment, according to Steve Drumheller, general manager of the resort.
On Saturday, visitors can watch reenactments of Civil War skirmishes, explore the encampment, peruse wares by artisans and crafters, and participate in field games and crafts, he said.
Sunday events include wagon roads, a final reenactment, and field games and crafts, and the West Virginia Irish Road Bowling Association will host a competition in the park starting at 1:30 p.m.
“There is no other place like West Virginia, and I think West Virginia Day is a way for all of us Mountaineers to show just how proud we are to have a little piece of Almost Heaven,” Drumheller said.
“It's always inspiring to see how these volunteers bring history life.”
The weekend's free Civil War events will be presented by the Barbour Grays, the 1st WV Calvary Company C, the 140th Volunteers, and the W.Va. Light Artillery.

Canaan Valley Resort is approximately three hours from Pittsburgh, 2½ hours from Washington, D.C. and 2¾ hours from Charleston, W.Va.
