PRT system in Morgantown to resume operations Thursday

In anticipation of students’ arrival on campus, the West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Morgantown, West Virginia, will resume operations Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019.

As part of continuing modernization efforts, the transit system was closed during the summer to work on system integration and enhancements. Part of this work included the integration installation of digital signage with the public address system on PRT platforms.

“We have been working hard to create an enhanced experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors who use the PRT to navigate our Morgantown campus,” said WVU Director of Transportation and Parking Clement Solomon.

“This summer, we also have added several new cars with the new system to our fleet during the summer, which will reduce wait times for passengers.”

Solomon also explained that the service mode is commonly known as the “demand mode,” and new connector lines soon will soon be implemented in the PRT schedule to allow for direct routes from one station platform to another.

Another exciting feature to be added later this fall is the vehicle countdown timer, which will inform passengers of the estimated arrival time of the next vehicle going to a specific destination.

The PRT will operate on a modified schedule throughout Welcome Week:

• Saturday, Aug. 17, 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m.
• Sunday, Aug. 18, 6:30 a.m. to midnight
• Monday, Aug. 19, 6:30 a.m. to midnight
• Tuesday, Aug. 20, 6:30 a.m. to midnight

PRT hours will return to normal Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Normal operating hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The PRT is closed on Sunday.

Students, faculty, and staff can ride free with their WVU ID. The general public pays only 50 cents per trip.
