Pawlak is a historic site manager for the Prince William County (Va.) Historic Preservation Division and serves as a certified battlefield guide at and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Pawlak is currently working on a study of George B. McClellan and the Army of the Potomac in the Maryland Campaign.

Fought just across the Potomac River from Shepherdstown in Maryland, the Battle of Antietam was the first field army–level engagement in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War waged on Union soil. It was the bloodiest day in U.S. history. More than 22,717 were dead, wounded, or missing.
