Gallery: Autumn in West Virginia by Jesse Thornton

Each season the staff at West Virginia Explorer asks a photographer to help us express the beauty of West Virginia. This year we've asked Jesse Thorton to provide us his take on autumn. Much of Thornton's work is for sale on his website, .

Autumn rains have replenished the Mash Fork of Camp Creek at Camp Creek State Park in Mercer County.

Mist rises off the upper Blackwater River in the Little Canaan Wildlife Management Area in Tucker County.

A pasture opens in the woodlands in the Germany Valley near Riverton in Pendleton County.

Wolf Creek falls over a ledge in the New River Gorge near Fayetteville in Fayette County.

Fog lingers in the forest of the Blackwater Canyon near Davis in Tucker County.

The New River Gorge Bridge arches across the forest near Fayetteville in Fayette County.

Huckleberry leaves sparkle like gems on Dolly Sods on the Allegheny Front in Tucker County.

Fog shrouds Black Mountain at Cranberry Glades near Marlinton in Pocahontas County.

Wreck of remarkable aircraft may remain in the mountains

Preservationists in central West Virginia are preparing to commemorate the site of the crash of a remarkable military aircraft sent to bomb striking miners during the infamousĀ Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921. The wood-winged bi-plane was coincidentally the first U.S. aircraft to drop a bomb on a battleship under the direction ofĀ Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, the father of the U.S. Air Force.
