In the highest mountain valley in the eastern U.S., the Canaan Valley, Canaan Valley Resort will celebrate the history of the Mountain State and offer a variety of adventures and outdoor activities June 18-20 during West Virginia Days Weekend.
Sam England, general manager for the resort at Canaan Valley State Park, said the resort is gearing up for one of its biggest summer weekends and one of the region's most popular celebrations of state history.
“Join us in celebrating West Virginia’s admission to the Union, which occurred 158 years ago in 1863, and all the history, heritage, and majesty she represents,” England said.
“Featuring an authentic Civil War encampment and live battlefield demonstrations, outdoor music, guided hikes, and an Irish Road Bowling tournament, guests have myriad opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and wonderous scenery of the highest mountain valley in the eastern United States.”
Civil War reenactment units will include performances by the Barbour Grays from Philippi, the 1st West Virginia Calvary Company "C", the 140th Volunteers from Green County, Pa., and the West Virginia Light Artillery.
Guests will be able to explore a recreated Civil War encampment with both men and women in period dress who will be going about their daily chores—interspersed with exciting live battlefield skirmishes.
On Friday evening, June 18, the Sodapop Gypsies Band will perform outdoors on the Quenchers Plaza slopeside at the ski area from 6-9 p.m.
Sunset chairlift rides at the park's ski slopes will also be available.
On Saturday, June 19, the resort will host a free, master naturalist-led hike, “Introduction to Birding.” There is no fee to participate, England said, and guests are encouraged to bring binoculars.
Canaan Valley Resort and Blackwater Falls State Park will host an Irish Road Bowling tournament Sunday, June 20, celebrating a traditional sport in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a course of country roads. Fun for all ages, no experience is necessary to participate.
In addition, guests have access to the resort’s outdoor pool, miles of hiking and biking trails, sporting clay shooting range, and an 18-hole championship golf course, among other amenities offered at the property.
