Seventeen historic covered bridges span waterways in West Virginia. Most are still in use or are open to pedestrians and cyclists. Only three have been moved away from their original locations, and most have been spectacularly preserved.

Touring covered bridges in West Virginia
Most covered bridges in West Virginia are located in three principal areas, which makes visiting them relatively easy. Eight are located in northern West Virginia in and near the Monongahela Valley. Another cluster of five are located in the Greenbrier Valley region in southeastern West Virginia. Three are located in western West Virginia north and west of the Kanawha Valley.
