Backbone Mountain, in Tucker County, extends northeastward from near Parsons, West Virginia, into western Maryland. One of the Allegheny Mountains, it exceeds 3,000 feet in elevation along most of its length. A roadside park, "Centennial Park," along U.S. Route 219, affords dramatic views westward from the summit across the valley of the Cheat River. The mountain has also been mapped as "North Ridge" and "The Devil's Backbone."
