The Briery Mountains, in Preston County, exceed 3,000 feet in elevation east of Kingwood, West Virginia, and west of Terra Alta, West Virginia, and mark the northern extent of the Allegheny Mountains in northern West Virginia. Like other mountains in the Alleghenies, the Briery Mountains trend southwest to northeast.
The mountains are geologically a northern extent of the Laurel Mountain range, from which is its separated by the Cheat River. Near its northeastern extent, Fike Hill, elevation 3,104 feet above sea level, is the highest summit on the range.
The Briery Mountain Wildlife Management Area is located near the southwestern extent of the mountains. The Cranesville Swamp Nature Preserve is located along the eastern flank of the range.
