The Wheeling National Heritage Area is a federally designated National Heritage Area that includes the city of Wheeling, West Virginia, in Ohio County, and industrial heritage sites associated with its industries and commerce on the Ohio River. Products manufactured in Wheeling included steel, nails, iron, glass, and tobacco products.
The existence of Ohio River crossings by road and rail here, combined with access to river traffic, made Wheeling an important inland port. Wheeling was also the first capital of West Virginia.
Principal historic sites associated with the national heritage area include the Wheeling Suspension Bridge and the La Belle Iron Works. Wheeling Heritage manages and promotes the district.
