One of the most important battle sites in West Virginia is protected at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park on the rim of the gorge of the Gauley River at its junction with that of the Meadow River. On September 10, 1861, Union troops attacked Rebels encamped on a farm that overlooked the ferry, forcing them out of the region and eliminating any significant threat from Confederate activity in the region of the Kanawha River thereafter. Visitors to the park will find more than a history lesson. Hiking trails, three Gauley River overlooks, reservable picnic shelters, and basic facilities are enjoyed by many who visit.
Directions: Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is located in southwest of Summersville, WV, in Nicholas County in the New River Gorge Region in south-central West Virginia.
