New Cumberland, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Hancock County, was platted in 1839 along the Ohio River by John Cuppy and was first known as "Vernon" and "Cuppy Town." It was renamed in the 1850s and was incorporated in 1872. The Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort is located along the river seven miles north of the town.
