War Ridge Camping Area

Eight public vehicle-access campsites are located in this open-field campground on the summit of Backus Mountain six miles east of Prince, WV. The campground is named for an early epithet of the summit now known as Backus Mountain, across which climbed a Native American trail: arrowheads found in the area during its settlement gave rise to the dubious legend that a prehistoric battle had been fought there. The campground is popular with hunters during hunting season. The nearest markets and service stations are located approximately seven miles east of the campground at Meadow Bridge, WV, or 16 miles west off WV-41 near Beckley or WV-61 at Mount Hope, WV.
