Biking
The variety of bike trails
perfect for mountain biking in West Virginia seems
endless -- open farmlands, shady Sycamore valleys, high
mountain tundra. Biking competitions are held regularly
throughout the state. Bike shops and outfitters can be
found throughout, particularly in the Canaan Valley and
the New River Gorge where trails are plentiful and
converge with other outdoor-recreation areas. |

Seneca
Rocks rises 900 feet above the valley of the
North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac
River, the centerpiece of this fantastic
landscape of rock and forest. Some extremely
rocky and technical trails highlight the
plethora of trails of every variety. The nearby
Canaan Valley hosts the 24 Hours of Canaan
Mountain Bike Race, famous for its technical
difficulty, though the broad highland vale
actually provides a variety of conditions. Two
state parks, several resorts, and the
Monongahela National Forest provide trails
throughout the area.

Virginia's premiere mountain biking destination,
the Alleghenies are replete with all manner of
opportunity for the off-road biker. The Elk
River Touring Center, at Slatyfork, serves as
the centerpiece for regional cycling and
annually hosts the world-renown Fat Tire
Festivals. Many rides follow the Gauley Mountain
Trail, four-miles above Slatyfork off U.S. Route
219; many single-tracks
branch off into the surrounding Monongahela
National Forest. Nearby Snowshoe Mountain Resort
provides two biking centers and 125 miles of
bike trails and hosts several nationally
sanctioned races. The year-round resort's
marvelous infrastructure of lodging, restaurants
and entertainment make it an excellent biking
destination.
