River Expeditions is kicking off its summer season with a Memorial Day adventure-vacation package that incorporates whitewater rafting trips on the New River starting at $135.
The 2017 package includes meals and lodging for three nights at the outfitter's 100-acre basecamp near Fayetteville, according to Heather Johnson, co-owner of the family-owned outfitter renowned for its warm hospitality.
Johnson said the reputation that River Expeditions has gained through the years is a result of a family philosophy that equates guests with stockholders.
"We don't have a stuffy corporate feel or culture, and we definitely don't have shareholders; we answer only to our guests," she explained.
"They matter, and we work for them. It's pretty simple."
Guests often say they feel more like good friends than consumers, she said.
The River Expeditions basecamp includes a lodge and conference center with an outdoor pool, gift shop, and a saloon as well as cabins, tent campsites, RV campsites, hiking trails, a zipline, a paintball course, and a disc-golf course.
In addition to its Memorial Day packages, River Expeditions also offers specials and events on the New and Gauley rivers throughout the season, including half-price trips Tuesday through Thursday, Johnson said.
Additionally, children always raft for half price on the family-friendly upper New River float trip, she said.
