Canaan Valley resort announces $6 million upgrade ahead of winter season

DAVIS, W.Va. โ€” Officials at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in northern West Virginia say they're gearing up for an exciting ski season with a slate of major upgrades designed to elevate the guest experience at one of West Virginiaโ€™s premier cold-weather destinations.

Supported by a $6 million investment from the W.Va. Division of Natural Resources, improvements include a new groomer to enhance slope quality and a new snowmaking pump house that will boost efficiency and snow coverage across the mountain.

According to Dillard Price, acting chief of West Virginia State Parks, the valley's snowfall and great beauty are what make it such a popular winter destination.

โ€œFrom the thrill of fresh snow to the stunning mountain views, Canaan Valley continues to show why West Virginia is a world-class winter destination,โ€ Price said. โ€œWith these upgrades, weโ€™re enhancing the quality, reliability, and excitement of winter tourism in Almost Heaven.โ€

In the Allegheny Mountains and in the highest mountain valley east of the Mississippi, Canaan Valley Resort offers 47 slopes and trails on 850 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 4,280 feet and a vertical drop of 850 feet.

The ski area features 26 designated trails with 100% snowmaking, nightly grooming, more than 117 inches of average annual snowfall, and a lift capacity for 6,000 skiers per hour.

Trail ratings include 20% beginner, 36% intermediate, and 44% advanced terrain. Access to the uphill route is available with a valid pass. Designated uphill trails are outlined daily, and safety rules are enforced to prevent conflicts with downhill traffic.

Beyond alpine skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers one of the longest multi-lane tubing parks in the Mid-Atlantic at 1,200 feet, complete with a magic carpet lift and nearby amenities such as a fireplace and restrooms at Bald Knob Haus.

An outdoor covered ice rink behind the main lodge will reopen soon, offering two-hour sessions and rentals. Nordic enthusiasts can explore 35 kilometers of natural-snow cross-country and snowshoe trails, including scenic access via the resort golf course.

Canaan Valley Resort also features lodging options ranging from 160 lodge rooms to 23 cabins and 59 campsites, along with on-site dining, conference facilities, a fitness center, and both indoor and outdoor pools.

Canaan is a drive of approximately three hours from Pittsburgh, roughly 125โ€“135 miles depending on your route. From Washington, D.C., it's approximately 180 miles away, typically a 3ยฝ- to 4-hour trip. Travelers coming from Columbus, Ohio, can expect a drive of about 4ยผ to 5 hours, covering roughly 275โ€“280 miles across scenic mountain highways.

    About the Canaan Valley

Canaan Valley stands out as one of the premier winter destinations in the Mid-Atlantic, offering a unique blend of high-elevation snow, sweeping mountain views, and a variety of snow sports experiences all within a compact alpine valley.

The region is anchored by two downhill ski resortsโ€”Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Timberline Mountainโ€”located just minutes apart and offering some of the best skiing and snowboarding terrain in the East. Together, they offer diverse slopes, modern lifts, and reliable snowmaking, supported by the valleyโ€™s naturally cold climate and extended winter season.

For Nordic enthusiasts, the celebrated White Grass Ski Touring Center delivers more than 50 kilometers of groomed and natural trails across rolling meadows, forests, and open backcountry, making it a favorite destination for cross-country skiers and snowshoers seeking quiet, scenic adventure.

Nearby, Blackwater Falls State Park adds another iconic winter attraction with its popular quarter-mile-long sled runโ€”one of the longest on the East Coastโ€”complete with a magic carpet lift for effortless return trips to the top.

With charming mountain towns, cozy lodges, local dining, and easy access to pristine wilderness, Canaan Valley blends resort-style amenities with an authentic mountain atmosphere. Whether carving downhill runs, gliding through backcountry trails, or laughing your way down a snowy sled hill, the valley offers a true winter playground in the heart of West Virginiaโ€™s high country.
