National Historic Landmark -- Halltown, West Virginia -- Jefferson County
Answering the pleas of black community leaders, West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Daniel Lucas donated land adjacent to the old "Colored Free School" for a place of worship. The Halltown Union Colored Sunday School, now called the Halltown Memorial Chapel, was built during off-work hours and used by the town's black residents. The Gothic Revival stone chapel is in nearly original condition after a 1983 renovation by the Halltown Memorial Chapel Association. Architectural features include pointed arch windows and doorways, open beam interior ceilings, stained glass windows in the sanctuary, and the original pulpit.
