Anawalt, WV (West Virginia), an unincorporated community in McDowell County on Indian Creek, a tributary of the upper Tug Fork River, was named in honor of Colonel Angus Anawalt, manager of Union Supply Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corp., which operated coal mines in the area. Like many towns in McDowell County, the dramatic decline in coal mining over the last half-century has resulted in a steep decline in population.
