Stanaford, West Virginia (WV), in northern Raleigh County, is a residential community highly regarded for its wooded neighborhoods. Many desirable properties overlook the scenic gorge of Piney Creek, a tributary of the New River. Many homesites at Stanaford Acres, one of the largest residential developments in the county, overlook the gorge. The community was first located in the gorge and was established as a coal-mining camp in about 1900.

Stanaford Massacre
Stanaford was the site of the 1903 Stanaford Massacre, in which seven miners were killed and 20 were wounded in a shootout incited by a posse gathered to help break unionization efforts. The murders were among the first committed during unionization of the coal mining industry in southern West Virginia.

Stanaford is located on highway WV-41 approximately two miles north of Beckley, West Virginia, two miles south of Piney View, West Virginia, and five miles south of the Bechtel National Scout Reserve at Mount Hope, West Virginia.
