National Historic Landmark -- Fairlea, West Virginia -- Greenbrier County
From the forests of the nearby Meadow River, carpenters employed by the Meadow River Lumber Co. in 1928 fashioned a small Craftsman style bungelow on the Greenbrier Valley Fairgrounds in which to showcase the company's hardwood products. At its peak, the Meadow River Co. was the world's largest hardwood lumber producer, producing an average 20 million board-feet of lumber per year. Fairs were a popular way for people to learn about new inventions, experiment with a variety of products, and enjoy carnival-style recreation. In 1941, the Legislature rededicated the Greebrier Valley Fair as the "State Fair of West Virginia." The Meadow River Lumber Building now houses displays during the fairs.
