National Historic Landmark -- Parkersburg, West Virginia -- Wood County
In 1928, the Smoot Amusement Company built an Art Deco movie palace across the street from where the Parkersburg City Hall stood. In its early days, silent movies and vaudeville shows shared the stage. It attracted top performers, including the Keith Vaudeville, Hilton Sisters, and Guy Lombardo's Orchestra. Though it fell into disrepair, the theater was saved from demolition in 1989 by a local volunteer group. After a thorough cleaning and some restorative work, the Historic Smoot Theatre reopened, providing a singular venue for performances.
