Coal Seams

The Tug River Coal Fields lies west of the area included in the Pocahontas field and consisted primarily of coal mining operations in the No. 3 Pocahontas seam. This region is marked by the appearance of the New River coal and the increasing thickness of the No. 4 Pocahontas as well as other upper seams of the Pocahontas group -- chiefly the No. 5 and No. 6.

There are twenty-five seams included in this region, but the six mined most extensively have been the Douglas (Red Ash), Sewell (Davy), Welch, Beckley (War Creek No. 4 Pocahontas), and No. 3 Pocahontas. There have also been mines in the Nos. 5 and 6 Pocahontas, Iaeger, Lower Douglas (Hughes Ferry), and the Gilbert seams.
