The Elk River Trail State Park follows part of the Elk River in central West Virginia and is principally a rail trail, incorporating railbeds along the river and two of its tributaries.
The park includes a 54-mile trail along the south bank of the Elk from near Duck, in Clay County, to near Clendenin, West Virginia, in Kanawha County. The park passes through the Clay County seat of Clay, West Virginia.
The park also includes an 18-mile section of the lower Buffalo Creek and an adjacent railbed. The Elk River railbed was purchased from owner Frank Jorgenson by the state after rail transportation of coal out of the region was no longer economical.
Though set to open in 2020, the park's launch has been delayed by the COVID-19 outbreak. Find out more at Elk River Trail State Park.
