The 134-mile Youghiogheny River is a tributary of the Monongahela River that drains a small part of West Virginia along the western flank the Allegheny Mountains. The Youghiogheny or "Yough" (pronounced "Yock") sources in Preston County near Silver Lake, West Virginia. From Preston County, the Youghiogheny flows northward through Maryland and Pennsylvania to join the Monongahela River at McKeesport, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.
The Youghiogheny River is a legendary whitewater rafting stream in its upper watercourse near Confluence, Pennsylvania. At Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania, the rivers cascades through a series of waterfalls, the centerpiece of Ohiopyle State Park.
History
During the uncommonly severe winter of 1787, pioneers bound toward the Northwest Territory traveled down the Youghiogheny River on flat boats to the Monongahela River and then to the Ohio River.
