West Virginia first set aside land in the 1920s to protect natural areas and accommodate outdoor recreation. These public land areas were designated as state forests. Though managed by different agencies, state parks and state forests in West Virginia are closely connected. Unlike state parks, state forests generally permit hunting and fishing in many forested areas.
