Pleasants County, in northwestern West Virginia (WV), was created in 1851 and named for statesman James Pleasants Jr. Its county seat is at Saint Marys, WV, which is located on the Ohio River at the mouth of Middle Island Creek. The Ohio River courses across the northwest border of the county. The landscape of Pleasants County is a primarily rural, and much of the land beyond the valley of the Ohio is wooded or agricultural. Middle Island, at Saint Marys, is one of the few islands in the Ohio River in West Virginia that is accessible by bridge. As of the 2010 census, the county population was 7,605.
