Hawks Nest State Park
The view of the New River Gorge at Hawks Nest State Park has attracted sightseers since mankind first began to travel the region. When U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall visited the site in 1812, it had become a renowned vantage point for trans-Allegheny pioneers. Today, within site of the New River Gorge Bridge, the park and overlook have grown all the more famous, and its lodge, restaurant, and aerial tramway attract thousands of visitors annually. Other park highlights include a lake, golf course, and miles of hiking and biking trails that guide visitors along clifflines and past waterfalls. Paddleboating and guided tours by jetboat on the New River are top draws. Inns, cabins, and campgrounds are located nearby.
Directions: Hawks Nest State Park is located at Ansted, WV, in western Fayette County, eight miles northwest of Fayetteville, WV, in the New River Gorge Region of southern West Virginia.
