Nitro, West Virginia (WV), a community that straddles the line between Putnam County and Kanawha County, was incorporated in 1932 and was so-named the establishment there during World War I of a large U.S. government plant for the manufacture of explosives. The Mardi Gras Casino & Resort, formerly the Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center, is located at Nitro off I-64 near the community of Cross Lanes.
