Piedmont, West Virginia (WV), a community in Mineral County, was platted by the New Creek Company, chartered in 1856, and so named for its location at the eastward foot of the Allegheny Front. The name "Piedmont" is derived from the Latin for "at the foot of the mountains" and aptly described the grade that westbound trains on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad ascended as they crossed the Allegheny Mountains.
