National Historic Landmark -- Green Bank, West Virginia -- Pocahontas County
A pioneer in radio astronomy, Grote Reber, of Chicago, Ill., isolated different sources of radio waves using a 31.4-foot-diameter radio telescope that he built with his own hands. In 1938, as an independent researcher, he documented the Milky Way as a source of incoming radio waves. In the early 1960s, Reber donated his historic radio telescope to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia, and supervised its installation on a turntable upon which it to be precisely aimed in any direction. The Reber Radio Telescope remains standing on the grounds of the observatory as a Grote Reber's dedication to radio astronomy.
