Formerly a state park, Grandview has been attracting picnickers and sightseers at least since European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. Cliffs that overlook the New River and other rock formations nearby, including Turkey Spur Rock, were developed as park by state conservationists in the 1930s when the site was incorporated into the state park system, after which playgrounds, picnic grounds and pavilions, and an amphitheater were added. In the 1970s, its Cliffside Amphitheatre became the home stage for the outdoor dramas "Honey in the Rock" and "Hatfields & McCoys." In the 1980s the park was purchased by the National Park Service and incorporated into the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
