The 22,928-acre Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA), ranges across forests of oak, pine, and hickory that mount the parallel flanks of Third Hill and Sleepy Creek mountains and the valley of the Meadow Branch of Sleepy Creek. Game traditionally hunted in the management area includes deer, grouse, fox, squirrel, turkey, raccoon, and bobcat. Sleepy Creek Lake, at 205 acres, is equipped with a boat launch and accommodates fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. More than 70 primitive campsites with pit toilets have been established in the forest. Camping trailers more than 17 feet long will find the gravel roads to the campground to difficult to maneuver.
Directions: The Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area is located in eastern Morgan County and western Berkeley County, six miles southeast of Berkeley Springs, WV, and 11 miles west of Martinsburg, WV. To reach the management area from Berkeley Springs, follow highway US-522 south approximately two miles to a right turn onto Winchester Grade Road (CR-13). Follow the latter approximately 12 miles to a left turn onto Shanghai Road, and proceed 1.5 into the southern reach of the management area. From the I-81 expressway at Martinsburg, follow the Tuscarora Pike (CR-15) west approximately 10 miles to Hampshire Grade Road (CR-7/13). Proceed 2.5 miles on the latter route to the management area.
The Sleepy Creek WMA is managed by the W.Va. Division of Natural Resources. It was formerly known as the Sleepy Creek Public Hunting & Fishing Area. Cacapon Resort State Park is located some 20 miles west of the management area along the paralleling ridge of Cacapon Mountain.
